Json Bikes 2023 US Tour

 

On Monday, May 8, 2023, I will be setting out from Wilmington, North Carolina on a coast-to-coast bicycle ride across the USA. I hope to finish in Oregon, the first week of August, about three months and four thousand miles later but as you can see from my planned route above, I'm not taking a traditional route straight across the country. 

My journey will begin heading down through South Carolina and Georgia to Florida. I'll be camping for a few nights and staying with friends in a few spots along the East Coast Greenway. After a short break in Saint Augustine, Florida, I'll head West along the Adventure Cycling Association's (ACA) Southern TransAmerica trail. 

2021 Bike MS: New Bern

 

The morning light had barely started. The sun was still an hour away from rising over the water. The harmony of Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake rang out, "Everybody Say Say Something...Say Something." I love that song and I just laid there in my tent and thought, "This is going to be a great day."

I was in New Bern, North Carolina on what was forecasted to be a hot but beautiful September Saturday. It was my first bike MS ride to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s mission to cure MS. 

I had wanted to do this weekend for a few years but always had schedule conflicts. In 2021 I finally had the weekend free and drove down from Raleigh to camp in the town square. It's a huge event with cyclists from all over the South and beyond, many like me camping right next to the water.

Well, here I am, starting another blog about my travels. Previously I was lucky enough to travel around the world by ship while working for Semester at Sea. Twice. When I wrote about my travels in 2006, I had to scramble to find internet cafes and places I could upload my ramblings. When I traveled in 2013, I was lucky enough to have wifi on the ship and kept a pretty regular diary of the ship. You can find the 2013 trip blogs in my profile under the About Me link.

This blog will be dedicated to the next adventure mainly by bicycle. It's both a new blog and a new chapter in my life. It's mainly going to be about my upcoming bike adventure (details soon). I'm going to try and do some videos on YouTube too. The social links are in the sidebar if you want to follow along.
