My last day at work for three months was yesterday and it reminded me of that feeling back in high school when you were getting ready to go on summer vacation. It felt like I should have my yearbook for people to sign.
Back in January, when I decided to start planning to take the summer off to ride my bicycle across the US, I didn't know what would happen with my job. The more I planned the more I decided that I was really going to do it, I knew I had to go no matter what my job outlook. Life's too short to wait.
So a few weeks ago I let my manager know my plans. I hoped they would grant me a leave of absence but I was going either way. Amazingly, and truthfully somewhat surprising, they granted my leave. I am grateful. It will alleviate a lot of future stress knowing I have my job to return to.
My team has been very supportive and sent me off with many words of encouragement. I haven't read any of them yet. I'm saving them for the challenging times I need them most. I look forward to returning to my office with many stories from my trip and showing all the cool places I'll visit this summer.
This weekend I'll tie up the loose ends at home, say a few more goodbyes, and then head to the coast Sunday. Monday the fun begins!
