Day five (Friday, May 12, 2023), and my thoughts were focused on getting to Savannah and having an off-day Saturday to rest my aching body. The time in the pool last night helped my leg a little and I was taking ibuprofen often to help ease the pain but I knew rest was the only cure.
I haven't seen a Piggly Wiggly in years. It's fun to stop at different grocery stores along the way. They are a great place to eat lunch at low costs. Also, always need more bananas.
Little towns with cute signs require a picture stop. Interesting to see the different slogans they use. Ridgeland, South Carolina, "The High Point of the Lowcountry."
I'd love to stop at local spots but sometimes I just want something quick and cheap. McDonald's is becoming a staple stop. It's consistent at least.
Another nice dirt/gravel path that got me off the main roads. The only traffic I saw was a baby dear that bounded off the trail when it heard me coming.
Haphazard Cemetary on a very rural road. I hope it was named for a family cemetery and not how they buried their occupants.
Construction zones have been great for getting my own bike lane and keeping away from trucks.
About ten miles before Savannah I hit a construction zone where there was no shoulder. I noticed a hardpacked dirt road and popped over and rolled up to a white work truck. The guy in the truck rolled down the window and asked if I needed any water. I thanked him and asked if I could ride the access road to avoid the construction traffic. He said to go for it and I had a great ride with great views.
After the construction zone, I took a break before going over the bridge to the convention center. Fortunately, there was a free ferry to take me into the main area in Savannah and I didn't have to do the giant bridge. I found a pool noodle in the parking lot and tried to take it with me. It blew off about two minutes later as I entered into Georgia.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to stop and take a picture of the Georgia welcome sign. I'm taking videos in front of every state sign but safety didn't allow it for Georgia. This was the best I could do.
I met a few people on the ferry who asked about my ride when they saw my loaded bike. This is not a trip for an introvert.
Georgia was my third state and this was my second ferry ride.
I love these old trees in the south. This one had a plaque that said it dates back to 1717!
I stayed with my friend Jay and his pup. I love dog time.
After I got cleaned up and Jay finished work, we drove over to Tybee Island and had dinner at Bubba Gumbo's. This was one of the best shrimp po'boys I've ever eaten.

I had only seen Jay one other time since we sailed together on Semester at Sea in 2006. That was back in June of 2018 when we went to a Colorado Rockies baseball game when I visited Denver. This was our first real chance to spend quality time together and catch up. I really, really enjoyed the visit.
